Dual diagnosis is when someone has both a mental illness and a substance use problem.

 Many people with alcohol and drug problems have a range of mental health problems at higher rates than the general community.

Patients with dual diagnosis are drug and/or alcohol dependent and the additional symptoms are varied, depending on the psychiatric disorders affecting them.  Most common psychiatric illnesses seen in dual diagnosis patients are personality or mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder.
